Job Description
A Network Control Technician will be asked to perform one or more of the following technical roles within the team. This determination will be made based on skill set and business need. The objective is to have all individuals obtain a high level of proficiency in at least one technical discipline as well as a solid set of skills in another.These positions work in a 24x7x365 network operations group, requiring flexibility to work across all three shifts (days, swings, and mids). The group operates in a team environment and are able to learn from, and share knowledge with others. The environment is fast paced and constantly changing. The ability to multitask and work under pressure is a must.
A TRANSPORT Technician should have a strong working knowledge of DWDM,SONET, add/drop multiplexors and digital cross-connect products from a support/maintenance view point. Operational background with various equipment manufacturers (Ciena, Infinera, Fujitsu, Cisco, Turin, Tellabs, Lucent, Alcatel, Adtran, and Carrier Access). Ability to read, interpret and follow complex CLRs from MSS, M6, and Martens databases. Strong problem solving skills and multitasking under stressful conditions should be expected. A complete understanding of telecom circuitry and digital hierarchy and fiber optics is necessary for this position. This includes understanding how telecommunication equipment interfaces with each other to include: DACS port interfacing, optical carrier (OC-3 to OC-192) interfacing, DSX panel connectivity, T1 and T3 theory and practical application.
Basic understanding of Switch and Data may be required.
A DATA Technician should have a strong knowledge of network protocols to include: TCP/IP, Ethernet, ATM, Frame Relay, and PPP. Operational background of various router manufactures (Cisco, Juniper, Adtran, Netopia) is essential and a solid understanding of routing protocols (OSPF, BGP, MPLS ,HSRP). In addition, familiarity with VOIP protocols (MGCP, SIP) are preferred. Ability to read, interpret and follow complex CLRs ranging from MSS, M6, and Martens. Strong problem solving skills and multitasking under stressful conditions should be expected.
Basic understanding of Transport and Switch may be required.
A SWITCH Technician should have strong working knowledge of a class 4 and 5 switches (Nortel DMS, Lucent 5ESS, Genband, and Metaswitch). Operational experience with various digital and multi-access loop carriers (Lucent, Nortel, ATI, Zhone, Carrier Access, Adtran). A background with Unix operating and various GUIs interfaces. In depth knowledge of POTS, Flat Business, CAS, PRI, GR-303, SS7 protocols, and switch translations and routing. Ability to read, interpret and follow complex CLRs from TBS, M6, and Martens. Strong problem solving skills and multitasking under stressful conditions should be expected.
Basic understanding of Transport and Data may be required.
Main responsibilities will include:
Outage Handling. Identify and correct issues during outage situations.
Maintain Tickets as they relate to network issues ensuring network integrity.
Perform Scheduled Maintenance as needed.
Provide 24/7 on-call operational support on a rotational basis.
Candidate would have 2+ years of experience specifically in the Data, Transport or Switch technologies. The objective is to have all individuals obtain a high level of proficiency in at least one technical discipline as well as a solid set of skills in another.
RequirementsHave 2-10+ years network monitoring and/or maintenance.
Minimum 2 years network monitoring and/or engineering.
Broad network background and solid understanding of DSL, T1, SONET, ATM, DWDM, TCP/IP, SS7.
Operating knowledge of various network equipment (voice, data, and transport) Nortel, Lucent, Cisco , Fujitsu, Tellabs.
Experience with troubleshooting voice and data circuits from DS0 to OC-192.
Experience with Routing protocols (EIGRP, OSPF, BGP, MPLS).
Strong written and verbal/phone communication skills. Must be competent in the use of PCs and standard software packages.
