Job Summary:Provides, as a member of the patient care team, nursing care for patients referred to the Gastroenterology Clinic(s) within the scope of practice and in accordance with the standards/procedures of the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates. An employee oversees the daily clinic schedule to facilitate efficient use of providers time and assists clinic physician and/or nurse practitioner with initial patient care and follow-up after discharge. Work may also include supervision of the LPN-Ambulatory Clinic-GI.Incumbents are also accountable for developing collaborative relationships with members of the clinic at all associated facilities; participates in clinic-related business meetings, maintaining membership in the SGNA and maintaining knowledge and skills levels by attending educational offerings as required. Essential Duties:- Provides care, in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team, for patients sent to the GI Clinic from referring facilities.
- Assesses patient/family needs and consults with appropriate provider, or Mid-Level Provider to relay information and to coordinate/implement an appropriate plan of care.
- Performs nursing activities such as taking vital signs, conducting initial assessment, reviewing medications, initiating medications within scope of practice, etc.
- Observes changes in patients condition (which could include physical signs and symptoms) in accordance with established procedures and standards of care; recognizes implications of change, takes appropriate action within designated scope of responsibility and reports to clinical practitioner.
- Answers questions and provides health care education and guidance, in collaboration with interdisciplinary care team, to patients and/or families; explains/interprets results, findings and diagnoses to patient and/or patients family within standards of practice.
- Performs triage activities by responding to telephone calls from patients referred to the GI Clinic; reiterates and reinforces instructions originally given by a physician or Mid-Level Provider (e.g. regarding medications and their use, discharge directives etc); consults with a physician and/or Mid-Level Provider as indicated by specific patient need.
- Provides comprehensive patient education in Gastroenterology procedures.
- Documents, in a timely, thorough and accurate manner, nursing care and patient status in the medical record in accordance with procedures and standards of care.
- Monitors patient medical records for completeness, initiation of care plan/problem lists, and procedure reports necessary for ongoing care; advises clinical practitioner as appropriate to ensure proper care is provided and that documentation is timely and accurate.
- Coordinates/facilitates referrals to appropriate providers and services in accordance with established protocols and standards.
- Serves as liaison and provides referral services for patients/families to address special needs (e.g. home care, social services, teaching plan, referral to sub-specialist, etc).
- Reviews discharge information (after patient has been seen by Physician/Mid-Level Provider) and assists patients with respect to any follow-up needs (e.g. follow-up appointments, scheduling, lab work, stop/restart medication, etc).
- Participates in the development of clinic standards, procedures and quality improvement.
- Performs periodic audits for regulatory purposes.
- Participates in committees to support staff education and comprehensive patient care.
Job Requirements
Education:- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing. Possession of a BSN degree is preferred.
- Minimum of three (3) years recent related work experience, preferably in gastroenterology or medical-surgical nursing.
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse by the Washington State Nursing Commission.
- Current Healthcare BLS Certification.
- Current ACLS Certification.
- National Nursing Certification in Gastroenterology strongly preferred.
