Salary: This is a full-time position at 40 hours per week and is an overtime eligible permanent classified position. The general work shift is afternoons (4 p.m. – midnight) or nights (midnight – 8 a.m.) with staggered days off (Sun, Mon or Fri, Sat) and/or variable shifts as needed. The appointment starts at $3,459.00 per month (Range 51 of the State of Washington Salary Schedule) with periodic increases to $4,542.00.
South Puget Sound Community College is currently accepting applications for a Campus Security Sergeant in the Security Department. Recruitment is open to all applicants who meet the desirable qualifications stated below. Applications received by the closing date may be used to fill similar vacancies which may occur over the next year. The Campus Security Sergeant encourages student success by promoting the general safety and security of the college campus, the protection of life and property, maintenance of order, providing assistance to visitors, students, faculty, and staff, and supervision of custodial functions for the college.
The Campus Security Sergeant serves as the first line supervisor for part-time hourly security guards, a full time security officer, and custodial staff. This position has daily interaction with students, faculty and staff and periodic interaction with members of local emergency response organizations regarding emergency response and the provision of security services.
The essential functions and responsibilities of the Campus Security Sergeant include but are
not limited to:
Supervisor for Security Officers and Custodians (30%)
- First line supervision of all full time and part time employees assigned as direct reports
- Monitor performance and complete performance evaluations for staff
- Take corrective action as needed to correct deficient performance
- Determine, in conjunction with direct reports, staffing needs, work assignments, and the scheduling of security and custodial staff and their activities and plan for the accomplishment of these activities in accordance with class schedules, building occupancy, special events, and college activities
- Assign employee work hours, job responsibilities and specific job tasks to meet the safety, security, cleanliness and safe environment needs of the College
- Assist department staff with scheduling employees under their supervision
Operational duties (63%)
- Perform office functions and operate office equipment including computers, copiers, telephones, radio, enter data in time and leave and record management programs, review briefing boards, memos, and verbal directives
- Ensure that administrative records and reports regarding personnel are accurate and current by reviewing employee time sheets and monitoring employee absences
- Operate security vehicles, properly utilize personal equipment including handcuffs, expandable baton, OC (Pepper Spray), and flashlight
- Make recommendations to improve department performance
- Perform all duties of campus security officer
Development of an effective and efficient staff through training of personnel (5%)
- Conduct, facilitate, and/or schedule training for security officers in all aspects of campus security duties, lockup, parking enforcement, radio procedures, report writing, vehicle operation, fire alarms, fire evacuations, earthquake, disaster, hazardous materials and other emergency situations, assign duty area, assist in the inventory of all lost and found property items quarterly.
- Conduct, facilitate, and/or schedule training for custodians with regard to work procedures, operation of equipment, proper use of chemicals, safety procedures, and college polices
- Complete a thorough orientation for new hires and arrange for job-specific employee training as appropriate
- Tour assigned areas with employees and indicate duties and responsibilities within each area
- Ensure provision of remedial training and/or instruction on new supplies and equipment as necessary; explain and enforce safety regulations
- Instruct, counsel, advise and interpret college policies, procedures and work rules for employees
Prepare reports on security and custodial operations and activities. (2%)
- Participate in the preparation and administration of security and custodial budget; monitor expenditures, prepare estimates for costs of unanticipated events and special assignments
- Review daily activity log for security activity and ensure timeliness of security public crime log
- Assist in preparation of Security Annual Report (SAR).
- Assist maintenance and grounds in detecting and reporting maintenance and safety issues.
Required Qualifications:
- High School graduation or equivalent; two years of work experience as a campus police or security officer or equivalent; no previous felony convictions; and satisfactory completion of a background check. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
- Valid Washington state driver’s license
Desirable Qualifications:
- Knowledge of first line supervision, methods of instruction, personnel evaluation, personnel rules, regulations, department policy, community relations, rules governing access to buildings and grounds
- Excellent communication skills, proven leadership skills and the ability to work well with others in a team environment
- Ability to work independently, perform multiple tasks, and accommodate interruptions
- Knowledge of applicable RCW’s and WAC for South Puget Sound Community College; SPSCC Student rights and responsibilities; SPSCC Board Policy, SPSCC campus and security department procedures;
- Knowledge of general safety precautions and fire hazards; methods and procedures in dealing with students, visitors, faculty, and staff; firefighting equipment and fire prevention methods; fire alarm panel operation; first aid; report preparation and writing;
- Knowledge of common office computer systems and software; verbal communication skills; observation skills; law enforcement basics including use of force law; defensive tactics; officer safety, traffic control, interviewing, investigation procedures, evidence protection and preservation, domestic violence, civil rights, FERPA, HIPPA, CLERY; electronic building access and security systems.

- Advanced knowledge of computers and software applications, specifically MS Office suite: Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
Physical Work Environment:
This position may perform in multiple settings, primarily in an office setting and will operate standard office equipment such as a personal computer, calculator, etc. The ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and accommodate numerous interruptions while performing multiple tasks is essential; The ability to communicate complex ideas and procedures to a diverse audience orally and in writing; The ability to provide clear, concise, and detailed training and instruction on work methods and procedures; requires level of physical fitness, manual dexterity, and mobility sufficient to perform high levels of exertion required to handle crisis and emergency situations in defense of self and others. This position may require moving, lifting or manipulating items weighing approximately 30 pounds.
